A 26-year-old St. John’s man who had a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old girl last year has been given a two-year jail term.

Derrick Bradley Skanes was sentenced today in provincial court.

He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual inference. A charge of sexual assault was withdrawn by the Crown in exchange for the guilty plea.

Once released from federal prison, Skanes will be on three years probation.

As Skanes was led out of court in handcuffs, his wife, as well as members of the victim’s family, cried.

Skanes admitted having sex three times with the girl between April and June of last year.

He had told the girl to keep their relationship a secret.

Crown prosecutor Heidi Wells had asked for a two to three-year jail term, while defence lawyer John Brown said a three-month term was more appropriate for Skanes, who has no previous criminal record.

In rendering the sentence, Judge Robert Hyslop called it is a troubling case. He said that while no physical force was used, such actions have severe psychological and emotional harm on victims, particularly children.

“These type of crimes call for sharp condemnation by our courts,” he said. “Courts have a duty to protect the vulnerable and innocent.”
