Crown prosecutor Dana Sullivan hugs a woman at Newfoundland Supreme Court in St. John’s Friday after Reginald Joseph O’Keefe was sentenced to five years in jail for molesting four children decades ago. O’Keefe sexually assaulted the woman’s three-year-old daughter in 2012 in a separate case.

Convicted child molester Reginald Joseph O’Keefe had just been given a five-year jail term and had been led out of the courtroom. At that moment, Crown prosecutor Dana Sullivan walked to the back of the room towards a woman, who stood up to meet her. The woman sobbed as the two shared a long embrace.

O’Keefe, 70, had been found guilty of six counts of indecent assault, as it was called in the Criminal Code decades ago, involving four girls back then.

The woman at the back of the courtroom wasn’t involved in the case, but she had a connection.

In 2012, O’Keefe was convicted of sexually assaulting her daughter when the girl was three years old. He got a year in jail for that crime.

The woman can’t be identified in order to protect her daughter’s identity, but she has watched this recent case closely and attended O’Keefe’s sentencing hearing a few weeks ago to show support for the four victims, who had flown in from various parts of North America to present their victim impact statements.

Sex Offender to Face More Charges After Release From Prison

A 67-year-old convicted sex offender will be released from prison on Saturday, nine months after admitting to sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl.

But NTV News has learned Reginald O’Keefe will be charged with other sex crimes dating back decades in Placentia.

O’Keefe pleaded guilty in November 2012 to sexual assault and sexually interfering with a minor. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2010 when a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted.

It turns out the RCMP in Placentia had also been investigating O’Keefe. Police have now filed information with the court alleging that O’Keefe assaulted four young girls in the Placentia area in the late 1960s and early ’70s. All of the victims were under the age of 16.

O’Keefe will appear in court in Placentia Aug. 29 to be formally charged with six counts of indecent assault on a female.

Man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting little girl

A Mount Pearl man accused of sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl in 2010 pleaded guilty to two of the charges against him on Wednesday.

Reginald Joseph O’Keefe, 66, made the surprise pleas just as his trial was scheduled to start for the day.

That brought the trial to an abrupt halt only a day after it had begun. It had been delayed for more than two years.

O’Keefe pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexually interfering with a minor.

The toddler called him “Uncle Reg,” but they were not related.

He was married to her babysitter at the time of the assault.

O’Keefe was taken into custody shortly after signing an agreed statement of facts Wednesday afternoon.

He’ll be back in court on Feb. 7, 2013.

According to the facts, O’Keefe was left alone with the victim one day in September 2010.

The victim said that at one point she and O’Keefe were on a bed together, when he pulled down her pants and his own.

“We were getting on top of each other,” the little girl told police during her interview.

The facts state that while O’Keefe ejaculated during the assault there was no penetrative sex.

O’Keefe told the victim not to tell anyone about what happened. The girl eventually told her grandmother and O’Keefe was reported to the RNC.

During her interview with police the girl was at first reluctant, only saying that she didn’t like O’Keefe.

When asked why, she said, “because he was bad to me. He hates me.”

Not long after, she recounted the story of being with O’Keefe on the bed.
